Helen Clark and UN mistakenly grant an award to an Indian tobacco company...

Helen Clark's been caught up in a smoking controversy.

As the administrator of the United Nations Development Agency, the former Prime Minister's granted a business award to India's biggest tobacco company.

Now she's issued a statement saying the UN is reviewing its rules to make sure that doesn't happen again.

Ms Clark says she was shocked to learn that the World Business Development Award was given to the company, especially as she's worked tirelessly throughout her career to achieve a smoke free society in New Zealand.

She says unfortunately the criteria for the awards did not exclude projects implemented by companies from certain sectors like tobacco.

Describing that as a serious oversight, she says the UNDP will not participate in the awards in the future, unless such companies are excluded.

A mistake she won't be making again, I bet!
